Alma College, a four-year residential liberal arts college located in the heart of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, offers a personalized education with multiple paths and experiences leading to success. A deep regard for students as individuals is fundamental to an Alma education, with small classes and many opportunities for one-on-one collaboration with dedicated faculty.

Alma College actively connects students with a world of ideas and opportunities. The Alma Commitment offers a four-year graduation promise and a pledge that each interested student can participate in an experiential learning opportunity, such as an internship, research fellowship, or study abroad, backed by $2,500 in Alma Venture funding from the college.

Alma’s attractive 128-acre campus is located in the city of Alma, approximately one hour north of Lansing. With an enrollment of about 1,400 students, Alma College employs a full-time teaching faculty of 96, of which 85 percent hold the Ph.D. or other terminal degree. Alma College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Alma College’s mission is to prepare graduates who think critically, serve generously, lead purposefully, and live responsibly as stewards of the world they bequeath to future generations.

Focused exclusively on undergraduate education, Alma College boasts a 12-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio, 41 academic majors, self-designed programs of emphasis, pre-professional programs in law and medicine, and an intensive Spring Term that provides opportunities for innovative courses, travel classes, research and internships.

More than 90 percent of Alma’s graduates go on to graduate school or are employed within six months following their graduation.

Our Community

Located in a community of 10,000, Alma College features a walkable campus with historic and contemporary buildings. The campus is a block from downtown Alma and within two hours of Michigan beaches and ski areas. Gratiot and adjacent counties feature plentiful parks, outdoor recreation opportunities, golf courses and shops.

College facilities, including the Stone Recreation Center and Hogan Center pool, offer wellness education, swimming instruction and recreational opportunities to community members and local businesses. The campus is bordered by the 41-mile Fred Meijer Heartland Bike Trail. The Alma College library, housing more than 278,000 volumes, also is a resource.

Cultural and sports events are offered throughout the year, with free admission to Alma College students, faculty and staff for most college-sponsored events. In addition to the college’s excellent fine arts programs, an active community of local artists has formed music, theatre and art guilds with a loyal regional following. Alma’s Division III Athletics program offers intercollegiate competition in 22 varsity sports.

Recent Alma College Diversity Initiatives

• In fall 2013, Alma College established the Center for Student Opportunity, a one-stop shop for students to make the most of their Alma education. One of the CSO support services is the Diversity & Inclusion Office, which promotes the academic success, equality and leadership development of students from all backgrounds. The CSO also includes Academic Support Services, Career Services, Disability Support Services, Financial Counseling and First Generation Student Support.

• In September 2011, Alma College received a six-year, $700,000 King-Chavez-Parks Select Student Support Services Grant from the State of Michigan to provide academic, social and financial support to economically disadvantaged students. KCP programming at Alma includes peer mentoring, safe zones, diversity dialogues, Hispanic awareness programming and Martin Luther King Jr. Week activities.

• In January 2014, Alma College partnered with Michigan Future Schools to increase scholarship support for inner-city Detroit students — a commitment announced as part of the first White House Higher Education Summit hosted by President Obama. The second phase of the college’s commitment addresses opportunities to enhance STEM education for these students.

• In June 2014, Alma College received a $175,000 grant from the Detroit-based McGregor Fund to further support Alma’s efforts to recruit, retain and graduate college-ready high school students from low-income families in the Detroit area. In the first year of the program, 10 new students were enrolled through this program.
